Cultivate Spiritual Disciplines
"Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance.”
1 Timothy 4:7-9 (NIV)
When I hear the word discipline my worldly ways can so easily distract me from what He wants for me. Cultivating some basic spiritual disciplines can produce a newness in our hearts and minds. These disciplines will be the anchors to grasp when our world crumbles around us. Not to check a box, but to truly be in relationship with our Maker as our deepest desire.
We often hear about the importance of spiritual disciplines, but what are they? These are the intentional practices that help us draw closer to God, shaping our hearts and minds to reflect the character of Christ. In 1 Timothy 4:7-9, the apostle Paul encourages us to "train ourselves to be godly," comparing it to physical training with a profound emphasis on the eternal value.
“She Reads Truth” Bible study breaks it down in this way.
“Spiritual” refers to a way of being and living that is connected to the Holy Spirit. In the book of Galatians, Paul says that if we live by the Spirit, we will “keep in step with the Spirit” (5:25). These communicate a divine partnership, where the Holy Spirit guides our steps, and we are called to obey the Spirit’s direction as we live out our faith.
“Discipline” refers to intentional, active patterns of behavior in pursuit of God’s presence in our lives. In 1 Timothy, Paul urges us to discipline ourselves “for the purpose of godliness” (4:7). Like how an athlete trains for a marathon through exercise, sleep, and diet, or a musician trains for a recital through practice and preparation over a period of time we can engage in habits that orient us toward our goal being more like Christ.
Here are some specific disciplines and challenges.
**1. The Discipline of Prayer:**
Prayer is our direct line of communication with Him. It is the way we converse, seek guidance, and express our gratitude. As we cultivate the discipline of prayer, we open our hearts to God's transformative power. Jesus, our perfect example, withdrew to pray regularly, emphasizing the importance of a constant connection with the Father.
*Challenge:* Set aside a specific time each day for prayer, creating a sacred space to commune with God. Give yourself all the grace here. This space may not look like a small prayer closet. Find the joy in your season. Perhaps you are caring for a loved one or you have a full house of little ones by your side. Share this space with them in this season. Creating something realistic is going to give you the best line of defense when the enemy attempts to get in the way.
**2. The Discipline of Scripture Meditation:**
The Word of God is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105). Meditating on Scripture allows us to internalize God's truth, enabling us to discern His will and navigate life's challenges. Immersing ourselves in the Bible daily helps us grow in wisdom and deepen our understanding of God's character.
*Challenge:* Choose a verse or passage to meditate on throughout the week. Reflect on its meaning and how it applies to your life. Write it on a sticky note or save it as your screen saver for the week so it’s always in front of you.
**3. The Discipline of Fasting:**
Fasting is a powerful discipline that involves abstaining from certain foods or activities for a set period. This intentional denial of physical needs allows us to focus on our spiritual hunger. Fasting teaches us reliance on God, strengthens our self-control, and heightens our sensitivity to His leading.
*Challenge:* Consider a fast, whether from a meal, a specific food, or a recreational activity. Use this time to seek God's guidance and reflect on your dependence on Him.
**4. The Discipline of Worship:**
Worship is more than a Sunday activity; it's a lifestyle. Engaging in regular acts of worship—both individually and corporately—realigns our hearts with God's priorities.
*Challenge:* Dedicate time each day to express your gratitude and adoration for God through worship, whether through song, prayer, or creative expression.
In cultivating these spiritual disciplines, we embark on a journey of transformation. As we train ourselves in godliness, we open the door to the abundant life that Christ promised—both in the present and the life to come. May our pursuit of spiritual disciplines be an offering to the One who calls us into a deeper, more intimate relationship with Him.
