God’s Role in Our Courage

Have you ever been around a really courageous person? How would you describe them? Maybe they are willing to take risks. Perhaps they are willing to face difficult situations. They likely accomplish challenging things. Do you ever crave that kind of courage?

It feels noteworthy and needed in this world, doesn’t it? There are situations each of us faces in our lives that call for courage. So, it’s likely you’ve searched Scripture for wisdom on this as well.

One of the most common verses we reference about courage comes from the book of Joshua. You may even have it memorized! Do you recognize these words from Joshua 1:9?

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9 (NIV)

We love verses like this one, don’t we? They are empowering, inspiring, encouraging. And yet, there can be so much missed if we don’t soak in the surrounding verses to better understand where this courage comes from. Let’s take a closer look to understand how we get (and maintain) courage!

Take a moment to read Joshua 1:1-9 for context as we dive in.

Ok, I don’t think anyone would argue the fact that Joshua has a tall task set before him. The beloved Moses, the leader of the Israelites, the one who led them out of their bondage of slavery, has passed away, and now the baton of leadership has been passed to Joshua.

I wonder what it felt like to be handed that kind of responsibility.

Knowing Joshua was in need of courage, the LORD graciously gives what kind of feels like a pep-talk to this new leader. And as He speaks, He communicates a few things I think are helpful to us as we discern God’s role in our courage.

First, He communicates a promise. In verses 2-4, He reminds Joshua of the promised land for this people.

“I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses.”

-Joshua 1:3

When we desire to be women of courage, we must allow God to first inform us of His promises to us. Rehearse His character. Read His Word. And don’t let your heart forget His consistent and faithful promises.

Second, He communicates His protection. Let the words of verse 5 just ring out:

“No one will be able to stand against you.”

Joshua 1:5a

Now, while the Israelites were literally standing before a plot of land with potential enemies to conquer ahead, we know this passage does not guarantee physical safety for us…But it means so much more. Is it just me, or do any other weary souls cling to God’s spiritual protection of His children? I’m reminded of Romans 8:31, when Paul lays out our assured salvation through faith in Christ. He says:

“What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”

Romans 8:31 (NIV)

Friend, if you are in Christ, who can stand against you? Let the protection of God pour over your heart today and embolden you to live a courageous life in Him.

Third, He communicates His presence. Listen to His comforting words to Joshua at the end of verse 5:

“As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Joshua 1:5b (NIV)

By now, we’re starting to see God plays a pretty big role in our ability to have courage. His promises, protection, and presence empower us to live a life worthy of His calling. Are you letting Him provide those things for you today?

Are you trusting His promises?

Are you resting in His protection?

Are you aware of His presence?

Only then can we follow through with the role He gives us…

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9b (NIV)

Your courage is fueled by God’s promises, protection, and presence. Stay connected to Him and watch how He uses you in mighty and courageous ways!
